Miyako ABIKO (Miss), Administrative Co-ordinator, GLEAMED LLP

Miyako has been the Administrative Co-ordinator at Greater London and East Anglia Mediation LLP (GLEAMED LLP) since October 2009. She was a volunteer Secretary to several human rights NGO networks in Japan while she read her Bachelor of Laws degree at University of Tokyo and subsequently whilst she studied for her MA in Public Administration at International Christian University in Tokyo. She was an active volunteer for Amnesty International Japanese Section and was a caseworker for asylum seekers as well as a campaign co-ordinator. In the UK, she gained her LL.M. in International Human Rights Law at Essex University, where she continued further postgraduate studies in international law and human rights until October 2006. She has completed a Refugee Studies Summer School at Oxford University and was also an intern and a research volunteer at Amnesty International International Secretariat in London, working on their Fair Trial Manual project. As a result, Miyako now has well proven legal research skills and a working knowledge of the law and instruments available in the human rights area.

Prior to becoming Administrative Co-ordinator for GLEAMED LLP, Miyako worked for GoodyBurrett LLP, Solicitors, where she revived their Japanese Department with a colleague and started assisting solicitors with Japanese client matters. She also worked on their marketing database and produced marketing materials, including a brochure targeting small firms interested in the exporting/importing business, before focusing on providing paralegal support for their Family Solicitors, an area where she retains an interest.
